UN decision could impede dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, says expert

In an interview with CNN, this Thursday (7), FAAP’s International Relations coordinator, Fernanda Magnotta, commented on the UN’s decision to suspend Russia from the entity’s Human Rights Council. For the specialist, one cannot ignore the “side effects” that the measure can bring.

“As Russia becomes more and more isolated, it loses space for dialogue within organizations, the tendency is that the proposed negotiation will encounter some barriers to advance. Negotiations are very cluttered and these new moves may hamper the Russians’ willingness to dialogue with the Ukrainians a little more,” said Fernanda.

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) determined, this Thursday (7), that Russia should be suspended from the Human Rights Council.

“It is possible that the symbolic effect has a kind of pedagogical orientation, but, at the same time, one cannot ignore the side effects that can also be caused by this decision”, added the interviewee about the UN decision.

Brazil abstained from the decision at the UN. There were 93 votes for yes, 24 for no and 58 abstentions.

Ronaldo Costa Filho, Brazil’s ambassador to the UN, told the meeting that “Brazil is committed to finding ways to immediately cease hostilities, promote real dialogue in search of a sustainable and peaceful solution, guaranteeing respect for human rights and humanitarian law. ”.
