The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released this Thursday (16) a note lamenting the revelations about the disappearance of journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Pereira, in Vale do Javari, in the Amazon.
On Wednesday (15), suspect Amarildo Oliveira Costa said he participated in the murder of the duo. The Federal Police investigates the involvement of five people.
In the statement, the OHCHR called the episode a “brutal act of violence”.
“We deeply regret the information about the murder of Dom Phillips and Bruno Araújo Pereira. We express our deep condolences to their families. This brutal act of violence is appalling and we call on state authorities to ensure that investigations are impartial, transparent and thorough, and that reparation is provided to the victims’ families.”
The entity appealed to the Brazilian authorities to strengthen the protection of indigenous peoples.
“We appeal to the Brazilian authorities to increase their efforts to protect human rights defenders and indigenous peoples from all forms of violence and discrimination by actors linked or not to the State, and to take measures to prevent and protect indigenous territories from illegal actions.”
