The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) estimates that around 110,000 people have fled the city of Rafah, in southern Gaza, since Monday (6), after the Israeli military issued an evacuation order for parts of the city.
Satellite images also show that Palestinians have begun to flee the city in large numbers.
“As shelling by Israeli forces intensifies in Rafah, forced displacement continues,” UNRWA posted on X this Friday (10).
UNRWA warned that although people have fled for safety, they have nowhere to go.
“Nowhere is safe in the Gaza Strip and living conditions are atrocious. The only hope is an immediate ceasefire.”
UNICEF Senior Emergency Coordinator in Gaza, Hamish Young, said people in Rafah “are absolutely exhausted and terrified,” noting that displaced people are at greater risk of disease, infection, malnutrition, especially children, dehydration.”
“Today, on the way here, I saw someone trying to move their latrine, their makeshift temporary latrine on the back of a donkey cart. I think that gives you an idea of how desperate people are,” he said, speaking of Rafah.
“Families do not have adequate sanitation facilities, they do not have drinking water and they do not have shelter,” he said, adding that “people are making makeshift toilets by digging holes in the ground around groups of tents.
“In Gaza, almost everyone has been displaced more than once,” he continued.
