UN estimates that it will take 300 years for women to have equal rights in the world

The United Nations Women (UN Women) has warned that, at the current rate of progress, it will take 300 years for women to finally have the same legal rights and protections as men.

UN Women Vice President-General Anita Bhatia told a news conference that it may take up to three centuries for women to achieve the same rights as men. She assured this when she presented the report The progress of the SDGs, a panorama on gender 2022.

Bhatia insisted that, at the current rate of progress, the Sustainable Development Goals, the goal centered on gender equality, could not only take decades or centuries to materialize, but labor force parity would not be achieved. will achieve in 140 years if things do not improve.

It will probably take 140 years to achieve equal representation in parliaments around the world.

The report ensures that women have lost around 800 billion in income, two years to date, due to the covid-19 pandemic. According to the UN study, it is estimated that by the end of 2022 there will be 383 million women and girls living in poverty.

In addition to this, the vice president assured that various factors worsen the situation, because in addition to the consequences of the pandemic, the current food, financial and fuel crisis have been the results of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.

In this same presentation, the assistant to the UN secretary general for policy coordination, María-Francesca Spatolisano, stressed that gender equality is the basis for achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals.

Meanwhile, Katie Tobin, the director of programs for the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), noted that “girls and women, especially across the global south, are the ones who significantly and disproportionately , are more affected by the climate crisis and environmental destruction.”
