UN: Extraordinary Security Council meeting on Wednesday on North Korea

The United States has called for an emergency public meeting of the UN Security Council on North Korea following the recent launch of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang.

The meeting of the Security Council will be held on Wednesday at 22:00 Greek time, according to diplomatic sources.

The meeting will take place as Washington expresses fears that North Korea will resume nuclear testing in the coming weeks.

The United States, which chairs the UN Security Council in May, has been considering calling for a meeting on Pyongyang’s latest rocket launches since late last week, according to the same sources.

North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Saturday, three days before the inauguration of new South Korean President Yoon Suk-geol, who has vowed to pursue a tougher policy toward Pyongyang.

Last Wednesday, North Korea fired another missile into the sea off its east coast, as Pyongyang pledged to deploy its nuclear forces “at full speed.”
