The United Nations human rights office said it was “extremely concerned” by the escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and warned of the risk of “regional spillover” from the hostilities.
“We are extremely concerned, deeply concerned about the escalation in Lebanon, about the attacks we have seen on communication devices, on pagers, followed by rocket attacks and exchanges of rockets from both sides. It marks a real escalation in the conflict,” Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, told Agence France-Presse on Monday (23).
Shamdasani said that “both the actions and rhetoric” of Israel and Hezbollah were “taking the conflict to another level.” The spokeswoman added that the UN has warned about the situation.
“Over the decades, we have seen civilians caught in the middle of these conflicts, this rhetoric, this escalation. But instead of a de-escalation, what we have also seen over the weekend is more rhetoric with new plans for escalation, and that needs to stop,” she said.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission, also expressed “grave concern” about the safety of civilians in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL chief General Aroldo Lazaro said on Monday that he had engaged with Lebanese and Israeli parties, stressing the urgent need for de-escalation.
