UN head asks for new hostilities in Gaza to be avoided

On Tuesday (11), UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked Hamas to continue with the planned liberation of hostages. The appeal happens a day after the Palestinian militant group announces its intention to interrupt the exchange.

“We should avoid at all costs the resumption of hostilities in Gaza, which would lead to immense tragedy,” he said in a statement.

On Monday (10), Hamas announced that it would interrupt the release of Israeli hostages to a new warning, due to what called Israeli violations of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, increasing the risk of rekindling the conflict.

Hamas should release more Israeli hostages on Saturday, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and other Palestinians detained by Israel, as happened in the last three weeks.

An Israeli delegation returned from Doha to negotiate the next phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday, amid growing questions about the process mediated by Egypt and Qatar to end the war in Gaza.

“Both sides must fully fulfill their commitments in the ceasefire agreement and resume negotiations in Doha for the second phase,” added Guterres.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Hamas should release all hostages maintained by the militant group in Gaza until noon on Saturday, or he would propose to cancel the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and “leave Hell happens. ”

Hamas high employee Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump should remember that the only way to bring Israeli prisoners back is to respect the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
