UN High Court ruling on women’s rights

LAST UPDATE: 20:53

The annulment of the abortion right decided by the US Supreme Court today “is a terrible blow to women’s human rights and gender equality,” said Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“Access to safe, legal and effective abortion is firmly rooted in international human rights and is central to women’s autonomy and the ability to make their own choices,” Bachelet said in a statement.

UN Secretary General’s spokesman comments on ban on abortion

Restricting access to abortion does not prevent people from seeking this procedure, it “just makes it more deadly,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman Antonio Guterres said today.

“Sexual and reproductive health and rights are the foundation of a life of choice, empowerment and equality for women and girls,” Stefan Duzaric told reporters. “Restricting access to abortion does not prevent people from seeking an abortion, it just makes it more deadly,” he warned.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reported that almost half of all abortions, 45%, currently performed worldwide are “unsafe”, making the procedure the leading cause of death for pregnant women.

The ruling by the US Supreme Court is a “major setback” and a “huge blow” to women’s rights and gender equality, said Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to UNFPA, almost half of all pregnancies worldwide are unplanned and more than 60% of them can lead to abortion. He recalled that the United States and 178 other countries supported a program in 1994 that “recognized how deadly abortions are and urged all countries to provide post-term care for women to save lives,” regardless of whether it is legal to abortion or not.

It should be noted that former US President Donald Trump had suspended funding for UNFPA because he “supports or participates in the management of a forced abortion or involuntary sterilization program”, which is denied by the United Nations. Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, has resumed funding for the Fund.
