UN Human Rights Council: Only one country backs Russia against condemnation of war in Ukraine

The UN Human Rights Council overwhelmingly supported a resolution condemning the Russian invasion and setting up a commission to investigate possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Russia was left completely isolated, with only one other member state – Eritrea – voting against the resolution.

A committee of inquiry is the highest level of inquiry the council can order – there is one for Syria, now there will be one for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The result of the vote – 32 in favor, 2 against and 13 abstentions – is a humiliation for Moscow.

China, Cuba or Venezuela who could have supported Russia – this time abstained.

However, some countries that voted in favor of the resolution, which was proposed by Ukraine with the support of the United Kingdom and the United States, expressed uneasiness that its wording was one-sided.
