The UN secretary-general will launch a fact-finding mission to find out the “truth” in connection with last week’s explosions at Olenivka prison in a pro-Russian separatist region of eastern Ukraine, he announced today, responding to requests from Kiev and Moscow.
“I decided to launch an investigative mission” following “requests I received from the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” Antonio Guterres said during a press conference, recalling that he does not have the authority to conduct “criminal investigations.”
“The terms of reference of this fact-finding mission are being prepared,” he added, hoping an agreement could be reached with Russia and Ukraine on those terms.
“We hope to have all the possibilities of access on behalf of both sides and to have the necessary evidence to establish the truth about what happened,” he added, clarifying that he is looking for the right persons, “independent and competent”, to join the mission she.
Last week, explosions inside the Olenivka prison in the pro-Russian separatist region of eastern Ukraine where Ukrainian soldiers captured in Mariupol were being held, killed dozens, according to the Russian military.
Moscow accuses Kyiv of shelling this prisoner-of-war camp, which Ukrainian authorities deny, saying the prisoners were massacred by Russian forces.
