The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said today that thousands of bodies had been found in the Kiev region in recent weeks, adding that many of the violations investigated by the UN after the Russian invasion could amount to war crimes.
“The scale of the illegal killings, including evidence of summary executions in areas north of Kiev, is staggering,” Michelle Bachelet said in a video link to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.
The Human Rights Council will decide today whether to commission a formal investigation into the events in Kyiv and elsewhere in February and March.
Russia denies targeting civilians and calls its actions in Ukraine since February 24 a “special military operation” to disarm the country and eliminate what the Kremlin calls Western-instigated anti-Russian nationalism. Ukraine and the West say Russia has launched an unprovoked offensive war.
