UN: More evidence is accumulating of crimes against humanity in Myanmar

UN investigators said today that there is increasing evidence that crimes against humanity are being committed in Myanmar (Burma) after last year’s coup in the country.

In its annual report, the independent UN Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar highlights that women and children are being targeted.

“Abundant evidence indicates that since the military seized power in February 2021, crimes have been committed in Myanmar on a scale and in a manner that appears to constitute a widespread and systematic attack against a civilian population,” the UN said in a statement it issued.

The UN Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, which was established in September 2018 by the UN Human Rights Council, aims to gather evidence of the most serious crimes in view of potential criminal proceedings.

“Crimes against women and children are among the most serious international crimes, but they are not sufficiently highlighted and are not the subject of adequate investigations,” says Nicholas Koumjian, head of the Investigative Mechanism, in the announcement.

“The perpetrators of these crimes must know that they cannot continue to act with complete impunity. We are gathering and keeping the evidence so that one day they will be held accountable,” he underlined.

According to information available to UN investigators, “sexual and gender-based crimes, particularly rape and other forms of sexual violence, as well as crimes against children were committed by members of the security forces and armed groups.”

According to the report, children were tortured, recruited and arbitrarily detained.

Following the February 1, 2021 coup that ousted former political leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the ruling junta has launched a bloody crackdown on its opponents, killing more than 2,100 civilians and injuring nearly 15,000, according to local media. government organization.
