The number of people who have fled Ukraine to escape the Russian invasion has exceeded 6 million, in the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the end of World War II, the UN refugee agency announced today.
Russia’s invasion, which began on February 24, has caused mass deportations of people, including more than 8 million Ukrainians inside the country, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) latest report.
According to UN figures, 6.03 million had left Ukraine by yesterday, Wednesday.
Most refugees have crossed into the European Union through border crossings in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, where volunteers and governments are trying to help them find accommodation and support.
More than 3.3 million people, mostly women and children, have crossed the border into Poland. The Polish government estimates that about half could stay in the country in the long run, which poses challenges for the real estate market, schools and healthcare systems.
