UN: More than 8 million people are internally displaced in Ukraine

More than eight million people have been internally displaced in Ukraine, according to the latest report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations agency.

More than 18%, or nearly one in five people, of Ukraine’s pre-war population is now internally displaced, said Ukraine’s 4th Internal Displacement Report, published Monday.

“The needs of the internally displaced and all those affected by the war in Ukraine are growing by the hour,” IOM Director-General António Vitorino said on Tuesday.

The latest survey, conducted between 29 April and 3 May, found that 63% of the internally displaced are women.

More than 50% of displaced families have children, 55% include elderly members and more than 30% have people with chronic illnesses, according to the survey.

With more than 5.9 million refugees leaving Ukraine to live in neighboring countries, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, a total of at least 13.9 million people have been displaced since the invasion began. Russian at the end of February.

“Thousands” more dead

Thousands of civilians have been killed in Ukraine during nearly eleven weeks of war on top of the official UN death toll of 3,381, the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country, Matilda Bogner, said on Tuesday.

“We’re working on estimates, but all I can say for now is that it’s thousands more than the numbers we’ve given you previously,” Matilda Bogner told a news conference in Geneva, when asked about the total number of deaths and injuries. .

“The big black hole is really Mariupol, where it’s been difficult for us to fully access and get fully corroborated information,” he added, referring to the port city in southeastern Ukraine that saw the heaviest fighting of the war.

The UN team, which includes 55 monitors in Ukraine, said most of the deaths were from the use of explosive weapons with a wide area of ​​impact, such as missiles and air strikes.
