UN: Occupation of Israel is the main cause of the conflict with the Palestinians

Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and discrimination against the Palestinian people are the “main causes” of repeated tensions and instability, according to a report by a commission of inquiry commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council.

“The conclusions and recommendations, related to the deeper causes (of this conflict), overwhelmingly refer to Israel, which we analyze as an indicator of the asymmetric nature of the conflict and the reality in which one state holds another.” , writes the chairman of this committee, the South African and former High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay.

“The end of Israeli occupation of the land, in full compliance with Security Council resolutions, remains crucial to ending the persistent cycle of violence,” the commission said in a statement.

“What has become a state of perpetual occupation has been denounced by both Palestinians and Israeli actors as one of the root causes of the recurring tensions, instability and protracted conflict in both the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including Jerusalem.” , the report continues.

The document was submitted to the Palestinian and Israeli authorities before its publication. The latter did not respond.

About 20 Israeli army students and reservists protested today in front of the United Nations headquarters against the publication of the report.

Some protesters had disguised themselves as members of Hamas, with their faces hidden by black balaclavas and wearing military uniforms.

“We are killing civilians and the UN is protecting us,” they shouted as others wore masks depicting Hamas leader Yahya Sinuar.
