UN: Open discussion on the future of peacekeeping – interventions of Greece, Cyprus and Turkey

An open debate on the future of peacekeeping operations took place at the United Nations Security Council chaired by South Korea in collaboration with Denmark and Pakistan. Ans. Secretary -General for Peace Operations Jean -Pierre Lacrua as a key rapporteur stressed that “peacekeeping is not a luxury, but it is the salvation for millions of people based on it for a future without fear”. He referred to the contribution of 60,000 blue from 115 states to 11 missions, highlighting the risk of escalating conflict (“61 active conflicts in 2024, the highest number since 1946”). He noted that peace missions must have “clear and hierarchical orders, based on the evaluation of needs and similar resources”, with the voice of the host states reflected on the terms of command.
