Forced displacement rose to historic new levels around the world last year, according to the 2024 Global Trends Report by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. The increase in total forced displacement – to 120 million by May 2024 – was the 12th consecutive annual increase and reflects both new and evolving long-standing conflicts as well as a failure to resolve long-standing crises. That figure would make the global displaced population equivalent to the world’s 12th largest country, roughly the size of Japan. A key factor pushing the numbers up was the devastating conflict in Sudan: as of April 2023, more than 7.1 million newly displaced people were recorded inside the country, with another 1.9 million abroad.
