UN records 1,892 civilian deaths in Ukraine since war began

At least 1,892 civilians have been killed and 2,558 wounded since the war in Ukraine began in February, according to the United Nations.

The number of deaths recorded includes 478 men, 308 women, 30 girls and 52 boys, as well as 71 children and 953 adults whose sex is still unknown, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said in a statement on Monday. Tuesday (12).

“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide area of impact, including heavy artillery bombardment and multiple-launch rocket systems, missiles and air strikes,” he said.

Actual casualty numbers could be considerably higher due to a delay in reporting from some locations, the OHCHR added. This includes areas such as the beleaguered city of Mariupol in the south-east, where “the numbers are being corroborated”.

Ukraine’s Attorney General’s Office reported a higher number of child deaths. In a statement on Wednesday, the country said 191 children had been killed and more than 349 injured since the Russian invasion began.
