UN says bread production is limited in Gaza; Food stock should last a week

The United Nations (UN) World Food Program updated, this Tuesday (17), information on the food issue in Gaza Strip and stated that the food supply in the region should last a week.

The UN contacted several businesses and markets in Gaza. Due to the closure of borders, especially in Rafah, between Gaza and the Egypt goods and supplies cannot reach the region.

Furthermore, according to the UN, only one of the five flour mills is in operation. Because of this, residents of the Gaza Strip will be left without bread, the organization points out, as only one of the 23 bakeries consulted by the UN has the fresh product.

Egypt has already stated that it intends to authorize the passage of humanitarian aid through Rafah, but needs to coordinate the action with Israel for security reasons.

Israel , in turn, stated that he will allow humanitarian aid to enter the southern Gaza Strip, said National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi. However, he warned that the entry would be stopped if it was discovered that Hamas was intervening.

Aid “needs to be directed only to those fleeing and not to Hamas,” Hanegbi said at a press conference, accusing Hamas of “stealing his hiding place.”
