UN says Israeli operation in Khan Younis will force hospital closure in Gaza

The Israeli military operation in Khan Younis will close the largest operational hospital in southern Gaza, he told CNN the director of affairs for the UN aid agency.

Thomas White, of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, said Nasser Hospital is “under threat” as it is in the middle of the battlefield.

For several days, the UN has been trying to gain access to western Khan Younis, where the hospital is located, but White said the agency was denied by the Israeli military because “the fighting is too heavy.”

“Now tens of thousands of people are on the road again, many of them displaced several times,” White said, adding that many are heading to the southern city of Rafah, where “there is no longer any open ground for people.”

“No one imagined the level of death, destruction and displacement we have seen over the past three months,” White added.

Palestinians flee back to the north

Dozens of displaced women and children gathered outside the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Hospital in central Deir al-Balah on Wednesday, raising their hands and shouting for a ceasefire.

Wrapped in scarves and winter coats, protesters carried signs aimed at Israel and Hamas, with messages that read: “Stop the war” and “Free the prisoners now,” referring to the Israeli hostages.

“We were forced to leave our homes. The airstrikes were in our heads, our relatives are under the rubble, they were killed in front of our eyes, so we fled,” one woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told CNN . “I'm dying. I don’t want flour, I want to go home.”

Huge displacement camps have mushroomed in Gaza, where diseases such as diarrhea, jaundice and hepatitis A are spreading due to poor conditions and limited access to clean water or sanitation.

“We have the right to live, our children have the right to live,” said Ismail Hassouna, another civilian.
