Rape, including gang rape, is “widespread” in Sudan after 18 months of war, according to a UN report published today, which mainly blames the Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitaries. “The scale of sexual violence we have seen in Sudan is shocking,” said Mohamed Saad Othman, head of the UN monitoring mission in the war-torn country. Victims of sexual violence range in age from 8 to 75, the report says, while perpetrators are mostly members of the DTY and its allied Arab militias, aiming to terrorize and punish Sudanese they perceive to be associated with their enemies. “There is no safe place in Sudan anymore,” Othman stressed.
