UN Secretary-General says Gaza is in the midst of “epic humanitarian catastrophe”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned this Wednesday (29) that the Gaza Strip is in the midst of an “epic humanitarian catastrophe”.

The United Nations chief’s statement comes as calls grow for a ceasefire to replace the temporary truce between Israel and Hamas men.

“Intense negotiations are underway to extend the truce – which we strongly welcome – but we believe we need a true humanitarian ceasefire,” Guterres told the UN Security Council.

The meeting was chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as China is president of the Council for November.

Last-minute negotiations continued between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants on Wednesday to extend a truce in Gaza.

“We must work for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire with the utmost urgency,” Wang told the Council.

“A resumption of fighting would most likely turn into a calamity that would devour the entire region,” he added.

Addressing the Security Council, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, accused the ministers of supporting “a terrorist organization that seeks to annihilate Israel”.

“Anyone who supports a ceasefire essentially supports the continuation of Hamas’ reign of terror in Gaza. Hamas is a genocidal terrorist organization – they make no secret of it – and is not a reliable partner for peace,” Erdan said.
