The United Nations Security Council (UN) convened, this Sunday (27), an emergency meeting of the General Assembly, with 193 member countries, to discuss the invasion of Ukraine through the Russia.
The meeting will be held this Monday (28), as Western allies intensify a diplomatic campaign to isolate Moscow.
The 15-member council’s vote was procedural so Russia could not exercise its veto. A resolution calling the session of the General meeting was adopted with 11 yes votes. Russia voted against, while China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstained. Brazil was in favor.
The move is the latest in a flurry of diplomatic acts at the United Nations in New York, coming after a Russian veto on Friday (25) in a resolution that condemned the invasion and called for the withdrawal of troops. China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstained and the remaining 11 members voted yes.
The General Assembly is expected to vote on a similar resolution on Wednesday (1st), according to the ambassador of U.S at the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told NBC’s Meet the Press this Sunday. No country has a veto in the General Assembly.
While the resolutions are not binding, they carry political weight. The United States and allies see the action at the United Nations as a chance to show that Russia is isolated because of the invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
They will look to improve the 100 countries that voted in favor of a General Assembly resolution in March 2014 after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region. That resolution declared a referendum on the status of Crimea invalid.
Voting will take place at the end of the special emergency session. It will only be the 11th session of the General Assembly convened since 1950.
The Security Council is also due to reconvene on Monday for a briefing on the humanitarian needs of civilians in Ukraine, requested by France, the United States, Britain, Norway, Albania, Ireland and Mexico. It will be the 5th meeting of the council on Ukraine since last week.
Russia would be in a position to block the movement if it so chooses. It is the council’s veto power with the United States, France, Great Britain and China.

According to the Deputy Interior Minister of Ukraine, Evgeny Yenin, talks between the delegations will take place on Monday morning (28), at local time.
Zelensky’s office reported that the president of Belarus, Aleksander Lukashenko, called Zelensky this Sunday. The meeting will take place on the border between the two countries, near the Pripyat River.
“Politicians have agreed that the Ukrainian delegation will meet the Russian delegation without preconditions at Ukraine’s border with Belarus, near the Pripyat River,” his office said.
According to Ukraine, Lukashenko assured that the military will remain on the ground, without activities, during the delegation’s trip, at the time of the meeting and during the return.
“Aleksander Lukashenko has taken responsibility for ensuring that all planes, helicopters and missiles stationed on Belarusian territory remain on the ground during the Ukrainian delegation’s travel, meeting and return,” the cabinet says.
