After the attack on a nuclear plant in Ukraine by Russian troops, the UN Security Council (United Nations) will hold an emergency meeting on Friday (4) in New York, according to three UN diplomats.
Russian troops occupied the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – the largest in Europe – where a fire that threatened potential disaster was extinguished in the early hours of Friday morning, according to Ukraine’s nuclear regulator.
The meeting will open with speeches by an International Atomic Energy Agency official and a UN official.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and UK Foreign Secretary said they wanted to have an emergency meeting after the attack.
Earlier this Friday, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief expressed his support for an emergency UN Security Council meeting after the attack. The EU area leader warned of the possibility that the attacks could have serious consequences.
“Russian attacks near Ukraine’s nuclear power plants could have catastrophic consequences. They must stop immediately,” Borrell tweeted this Friday (4). “The bombing and resulting fire at the power plant [Zaporizhzhia] could put all of Josep Borrell in Europe at risk,” he added.
According to a statement shared by Energoatom – Ukraine’s nuclear power operator – via Telegram this Friday, the plant’s staff continues to work on the power units, “ensuring the stable operation of the nuclear facilities”.
