After a Russian offensive near a nuclear plant in Ukraine, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this Friday (4) in New York, according to three UN diplomats.
Russian troops occupied the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, considered the largest in Europe – where a fire in the area threatened potential disaster was extinguished in the early hours of Friday morning, according to Ukraine’s nuclear regulator.
The meeting will open with speeches by an International Atomic Energy Agency official and a UN official. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the UK Foreign Secretary said they wanted to have an emergency meeting after the Russian offensive.
Earlier this Friday, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief expressed his support for an emergency UN Security Council meeting after the attack. The EU area leader warned of the possibility that the attacks could have serious consequences.
“Russian attacks near Ukraine’s nuclear power plants could have catastrophic consequences. They must stop immediately,” Borrell tweeted this Friday (4). “The bombing and resulting fire in the power plant area [Zaporizhzhia] could put all of Josep Borrell in Europe at risk,” he added.
According to a statement shared by Ukraine’s nuclear power operator Energoatom via Telegram on Friday, the plant’s staff continues to work on the power units, “ensuring the stable operation of the nuclear facilities”.
