The UN Security Council will meet on Tuesday (9) to discuss an alleged Russian attack on Ukraine that targeted the main children’s hospital in the capital Kiev, diplomats said.
Russia struck the hospital with a missile in broad daylight on Monday (8) and launched missiles at other cities in Ukraine, killing at least 36 civilians, officials said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the Russian attacks and called the attack on the children’s hospital and another medical facility “particularly shocking”, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
“Directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects is prohibited under international humanitarian law, and any such attacks are unacceptable and must end immediately,” he warned.
The Security Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning was requested by the United Kingdom, France, Ecuador, Slovenia and the United States.
“We will denounce Russia’s cowardly and depraved attack on the hospital,” British UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said in a post on X.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had struck defense industry targets and aviation bases in Ukraine, denying targeting civilians, although its strikes have killed thousands of civilians since its invasion in February 2022.
