The United Nations Security Council will meet on Friday (20) to discuss the explosions of pagers in Lebanon against the Hezbollah group, said Slovenia’s ambassador to the UN, Samuel Zbogar.
The meeting was requested by Algeria on behalf of the Arab states, Zbogar added.
Earlier on Wednesday (18), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the pager explosions against Hezbollah indicate “a serious risk of a dramatic escalation in Lebanon and everything must be done to avoid this tension”.
“Obviously, the logic of setting off all these devices is a preemptive strike before a major military operation,” Guterres told reporters ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly.
He also pointed out that civilian objects should not be turned into weapons.
Guterres “urges all parties involved to take measures to avoid any further escalation,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
THE CNN has learned that Israel was behind the attack that caused thousands of pagers belonging to Hezbollah members to explode simultaneously in Lebanon on Tuesday (17).
