UN: Sees possible 8% -20% increase in food prices as a result of the war in Ukraine

International food and feed prices are likely to rise between 8% and 20% as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, causing a dramatic increase in malnourished people around the world, according to the UN food service.

In a first assessment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Food and Agriculture Organization said it was unclear whether Ukraine would be able to reap the harvest during a protracted conflict, with uncertainty also surrounding Russian food exports.

The agency stressed that Russia was the largest exporter of iron in the world, while Ukraine was the fifth largest.

Together they supply 19% of the world’s grain supply, and 4% of maize, accounting for more than a third of world grain exports.
