UN Spokesperson Lewis Hamilton releases report on refugee education

The Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is one of the voices contributing to the dissemination of a report by the United Nations (UN) Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) on refugee education published this Tuesday (13).

According to the survey, the enrollment percentage of refugee students at the secondary level, that is, in high school, is 37% for the academic year 2020-2021. In Elementary School, the number is higher: 68% of refugee children are enrolled in primary schools.

The percentage related to Higher Education is the lowest of the three levels: 6%. However, according to the UNHCR, the trend is for growth and there is an expectation that the 15% target can be reached by 2030.

The report “All In: The Campaign for Refugee Education” has information from more than 40 countries. The data is generated annually, in the run-up to the UN General Assembly, when world leaders will debate the future of learning at the Transformative Education Summit.

“Education not only broadens people’s horizons and presents them with opportunities they would never dream of having otherwise. It counteracts the harmful effects of systemic injustice,” says Hamilton in the report’s epilogue.

Among other markers, the document provides a comparison regarding the enrollment rates of refugees and non-refugees in the same country. In this clipping, nine nations were analyzed.

The conclusion is that refugee children face conditions as difficult as non-refugee children from the poorest strata of a country. In some cases, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation of the former is even worse.

The rate of out-of-school refugees in Congo in 2020, when the country was home to a refugee population of around 490,000 people, was 65%. The percentage of children who are part of the least economically favored group in the country was 35%.
