UN: The Czech Republic will replace Russia in the Human Rights Council

The United Nations General Assembly today elected the Czech Republic to the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council to replace Russia, whose membership was suspended last month due to its invasion of Ukraine. immediately withdrew from the body which has 47 member states.

Russia was in the second year of its three-year term. The Czech Republic will complete this term in the Council, which cannot take legally binding decisions. His decisions carry political weight, however, and may authorize investigations.

The Czech Republic was elected with 157 votes in favor while 23 countries abstained. Her term begins immediately.

The Human Rights Council is expected to hold a special session on Ukraine on Thursday, an official said Monday after calling on Kiev to look into the situation there, including information on mass casualties in Mariupol.

The United States has led a rare effort to halt Russia’s involvement in the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation.” Libya’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council was suspended in 2011 due to violence against protesters by forces loyal to then-leader Muammar Gaddafi.
