The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today expressed concern about the hundreds of migrants who have camped in the countryside near the Belarusian-Polish border and called for an end to the practice of using vulnerable people as political pawns.
“We are very concerned about the scenes we see from the Belarus-Poland border,” UNHCR spokeswoman Sambia Mantou told reporters at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is particularly concerned about the fate of women and children in the region, she said.
“We have repeatedly said that the use of refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants for political purposes is unacceptable and must stop,” he said.
Poland accuses Belarus of trying to provoke a major confrontation by encouraging migrants to cross the border and cross into Poland and the European Union.
