UN Uses NFT in Global Warming Initiative

The United Nations (UN) has selected the Unique Network platform to implement the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) Initiative for its Climate Change Project.

According to the press release, Unique Network will be the leading technology partner of the UN Human Settlement program and the International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Change, under which the work of young artists will be tokenized.

The Digital Art for Climate Action Empowerment or DigitalArt4Climate program encourages artists to showcase works of art and inspire people to find better solutions for the environment.

“The United Nations recognizes the uniqueness of NFT as a new tool for creative expression that can help improve communication of climate change initiatives,” the group said. “The UN wants to bring this innovative art form to the next generation of creators who will benefit from technology by monetizing and increasing the visibility of their work.”

The developers of Unique Network – a parachain in the Kusama and Polkadot ecosystem – will create an NFT marketplace for this initiative. Developers competed in a virtual hackathon last month to create a digital art gallery and marketplace called DigitalArt4Climate, according to the UN.

Late last year, the UN and LTO Network introduced a blockchain platform for registering land rights. In November 2020, David Robinson, regional adviser to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, announced that blockchain will help governments in different countries fight corruption. In addition, early last year, Bitfury and the UN announced joint plans to implement an environmental project in Kazakhstan.
