UN vote on Israel’s “illegal” occupation of Palestinian lands

The UN General Assembly will begin its meetings next week, and specifically on Tuesday, September 17, to discuss a draft resolution drawn up by the Palestinian permanent delegation to the Organization. This resolution is based on the opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which characterizes as “illegal” the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel. In July, following a request for an opinion from the General Assembly, the ICJ, ruling on the Israeli occupation since 1967, ruled that “Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal” and that Israel is “obliged to end the sooner”. Reacting to this opinion, Arab countries requested a new convening of the General Assembly, scheduled for September 17, to consider a draft resolution, on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on the number of states that take the floor.
