French President Emmanuel Macron’s office declared this Thursday (5) that the preview of the agreement reached between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc in South America is “unacceptable”.
The Élysée Palace, the official residence of the presidency, issued the statement after the arrival of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Uruguay.
It aims to finalize the agreement between the EU and Mercosur, which includes agricultural powers Brazil and Argentina.
Macron informed von der Leyen that France cannot accept the agreement in its current state, wrote Élysée in the statement, published on the social network X.
Le projet d’accord entre l’UE et le Mercosur est unacceptable en l’état. Le Président @EmmanuelMacron l’a redit aujourd’hui à la president de la Commission europeenne.
Nous continuarons de defense sans relâche notre souveraineté agricole.

The deal, supported by most South American countries and strongly pushed by Germany and Spain within the EU, was met with strong opposition from Paris due to fears that cheaper agricultural imports would harm France’s agricultural sector.
