Uncertain future of BBC?

The Johnson administration is clearly talking about an end to public funding for the state station. The opposition sees an attempt to disorient the people from the “partygate”.

The BBC is the oldest national broadcaster in the world and the largest, with more than 22,000 employees. However, 100 years after its founding, perhaps for the first time, the continuation of its operation is endangered. At least as we know it today.

The station’s months of discussions with the British government did not seem to have the best outcome, with Culture Minister Nandin Doris talking about a freeze and later a complete withdrawal of BBC payments by British citizens.

The British minister said that “the days when older people were threatened with imprisonment and court officials knocked on doors were over”, while she clarified that “the next announcement about the end of the BBC leave will be the last as it is time to discuss new ways of financing and selling this great British organization “.

What about the operation and funding of the BBC

Initially, the BBC operated under a royal decree, which set out the station’s purpose and funding, essentially acting as the constitutional basis for the British broadcaster.

Under this provision, payment of a fee – from British citizens to the BBC – is definitely guaranteed until 31 December 2027. However, the station’s annual fee is set by the government and increases according to inflation, thus covering all station services such as TV, radio, website, podcasts and applications.

Now Culture Minister Nandin Doris has voiced the government’s intention to freeze the BBC’s fee for two years at 9 159 a year – rather than increase it as expected due to inflation – adding that the move is due to the dramatic rising cost of living in the United Kingdom.

“BBC targets Johnson to save his prime ministership”

Many British media and opposition believe that the announcements and the targeting of the public channel are made in an attempt by Boris Johnson to convey the debate and to “throw” the party scandals over him.

Labor leader Lucy Powell even accused Johnson and Doris of being “devilishly determined to attack the great British institution because they do not like its journalism”.

“Hands off the BBC” warned the Liberal Party, while talking about a “reckless ideological crusade” that the government must stop.

The BBC is estimated to receive more than ,5 3.5 billion a year from license fees, and even a freeze on payment would mean the loss of many millions a year and certainly the “demolition” of many public service stations.
