Under new management, centenary bar in downtown Rio once again rocks Cinelândia

Centenary carioca address that was kind of down and almost closed in this pandemic, the yellow, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, received a major boost at the end of 2021. The historic bar, founded in 1921 on the ground floor in a yellow-fronted building (hence the name), was purchased by the owners of the famous chain Boteco Belmonte, which gave the place an injection of spirit.

The clientele was homesick. Former regulars and curious to know if the change has kept the soul of the place have crowded the delightful corner balcony — which allows you to see the stunning Municipal Theater, the City Council, the National Library and, of course, the comings and goings of passersby.

It’s impossible to occupy a table there and not try to imagine Amarelinho’s glamorous past. When it emerged, in the heart of Cinelândia, it received elite figures, politicians and artists in that region once full of cinemas and theaters, which earned it the nickname “Brazilian Broadway”.

The house came back with the same look, but Belmonte’s paternity is evident in the standard of service, in the higher prices and in the care in serving the beer (Brahma) at the right temperature and with a creamy collar.

The snacks offered by the table-to-table unit that made Belmonte famous have arrived on the menu. Among them are the pastries with various fillings (R$ 6 to R$ 10); the feijoada cake (with black beans, cabbage and bacon; R$ 10), which calls for a pepper to enhance the flavor; and the pantagruélica open pies, especially the shrimp with catupiry (R$ 18).

For more voracious appetites, portions to share or well-served dishes are fine. Among the suggestions are bohemian classics such as jerky with fried cassava and farofa (R$ 99), chicken with bird (R$ 40), Oswaldo Aranha style filet mignon (R$ 130) with fried garlic, rice, farofa and potato. portuguese, filet parmigiana with broccoli rice and fries (R$130) and breaded shrimp with Greek rice (R$120).

The best times to visit are aa happy hour during the week and lunches on Saturday and Sunday, when there is live samba and chorinho, from 1 pm to 5 pm. Tip: Amarelinho is easily accessible by subway or VLT.
