Three days after Erdogan’s visit to Tirana, where the President of Turkey called the Albanians “brothers”, a questionnaire was issued, during which the Directorate of Education in Tirana asked teachers of children aged 9-12 to choose which of them will learn Turkish.
The online message with the questionnaire to students and parents was sent to the teachers of the grades corresponding to the sixth grade and the three grades of the High School.
Many have pointed to the fact that Erdogan’s Turkey’s cultural attack on the Balkans unfolded in this case as well, with the Turkish president seizing the opportunity to push for a decision and the Albanian government apparently bowing.
These roots of the decision go back to March 2, 2021, when an agreement was signed between the two countries, which provided for the introduction of Turkish as the language of choice. As stated in paragraph 3 of Article 3 of the Decision “the two Parties shall encourage the teaching and learning of the official language of the other Party, as well as of its literature and culture, in their educational system”. Respectively, the two countries are committed to sending students to each other on an annual basis through percentages.
The Minister of Education, wanting to defend the fact that Erdogan had nothing to do with it and that everything was pre-determined, clarified that based on the fact that English has been introduced in the first grade, then in the sixth grade the student must choose a second language. Based on this, it is tested whether the Turkish language is preferred so that in the end it becomes an elective course, such as German, Spanish, French. However, he clarified that no decision has been made so far.
“It’s not immediately after Erdogan’s visit, it started in December when English became compulsory language in the first grade and according to the new curriculum in the sixth grade students will have a second language, which can be German, Spanish, French The agreement stipulates that we will conduct a pilot study to see if there is any interest in learning Turkish. “which areas will need to open elective courses or not”, said the minister.
