Under pressure, governors set a meeting in Brasilia to discuss fuel

Governors arrive next week in Brasília to discuss the change in the taxation of the Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) on fuel, the main source of revenue for the States.

The change in the tax was approved by the National Congress last week, after a successful movement led by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Since last year, the president has blamed states for rising fuel prices.

With the skyrocketing price of international oil and the readjustment of gasoline, diesel oil and cooking gas, the government got the support of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies to approve the project that unifies the ICMS rate.

as revealed the Estadãothe measure may end up generating an increase in the tax burden in states that currently practice lower taxation.

The meeting will mark the X National Forum of Governors, which will take place at Banco do Brasil. It will have as a second topic on the agenda the definition of a coordination of the policy of flexibilization of health measures by the States in the face of the cooling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organizers of the event claim that it will be one of the most important meetings of the year before the election campaign starts. The Forum is chaired by the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha.
