Understand how a bacterial infection, as in the case of Madonna, can lead to UTI

At the age of 64, the singer Madonna is facing significant health problems and had to postpone his world tour in celebration of his 40th career. According to a statement issued by her manager, Guy Oseary, the artist was diagnosed with a bacterial infection, which left her in the ICU.

“On Saturday, June 24th, Madonna developed a severe bacterial infection which led to her being admitted to the ICU for several days. Her health is improving, but she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected,” wrote Oseary, via his social media.

“At this time, we will need to pause all commitments, which includes touring. We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for the rescheduled shows,” he concluded.

The specific details about the bacterial infection have not yet been publicly revealed, but for the infectologist André Piraja the artist must have developed the most serious condition of an infection, called sepsis.

“Also known as septicemia or generalized infection, sepsis is a condition that needs to be treated carefully, as it can lead to death. When the organism undergoes an infection caused by viruses and bacteria, for example, the immune system generates a response, aiming to combat the multiplication and proliferation of this organism”, details the specialist.

Sepsis can even have an infectious focus in different parts of the body. “In pulmonary sepsis, the focus is on the lungs, while abdominal sepsis affects one of the organs that are located in the abdomen, such as the appendix”, he exemplifies.

case for ICU

The infectologist Ivan France, from the Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, in São Paulo, explains that serious respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, for example, can take any patient to the intensive care unit. However, nothing prevents milder situations, such as sinusitis, from being referred to the ICU.

“We don’t know what her infection is, but probably when we talk about a bacterial infection, we think of a lung infection, precisely because she needs greater oxygenation support. Of course, more serious contexts may demand this closer care, regardless of the part of the body”.

For the infectologist, the five days of medication that the pop queen is facing may already signal a positive response, although the recovery time, depending on the body of each individual, may take a while.

“Regarding the tour, we imagine how tiring it must be and, therefore, it really needs some recovery time”, he explains.

“The Celebration Tour”

Announced in January of this year, “The Celebration Tour” was scheduled to start on the 15th in Vancouver, Canada, with tickets already sold out. According to the event producer, there is no information about the tour coming to Brazil.
