Understand how Israeli bombings can affect thousands of Brazilians in Lebanon

Lebanon has been the target of Israeli bombings since the beginning of the week, when the country had its deadliest day since the 2006 war, with more than 500 fatalities on Monday (23). According to the Israeli military, the targets are members and military infrastructure of Hezbollah, one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the Middle East and supported by Iran.

Ali Kamal Abdallah, 15 years old, was one of the 21,000 Brazilians living in Lebanon, according to data from Itamaraty. He died in an Israeli airstrike in the Bekka Valley, 30 kilometers from the capital Beirut.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared its “deep regret” over the teenager’s death. Ali’s brother, Mohamed Kamal Abdalah, 17, is being brought to Brazil together with a sister and is expected to disembark in the country at the end of this Thursday (26).

The Brazilian Embassy in Beirut began consulting on Tuesday (24) Brazilians living in Lebanon about their interest in receiving support from the Brazilian government to leave the Middle Eastern country. Brazilians were instructed to fill out a form so that Brazil can continue planning a possible rescue operation.

More than 90,000 people have recently been displaced in the country, the United Nations said. Another 70,000 are registered in shelters, the Lebanese Interior Minister said.

Hezbollah and Israel began exchanging attacks after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese group is an ally of Hamas, which invaded Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, killing hundreds of people and capturing hostages.

Due to the bombings, thousands of residents of northern Israel, where the border with Lebanon is located, had to be displaced. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised several times to return these citizens to their homes.

On September 17, Israel added the return of these residents as an official war objective.
