Understand how the quotas will work for trans people at Unicamp

THE University of Campinas (Unicamp) approved quotas for people trans, transvestites and non-binary in its undergraduate courses . The reserve of vacancies, valid for entry by the National High School Exam (Enem) was unanimously approved by the University Council on Tuesday (1st). The measure aims to expand the access of this group to higher education and recognize the specificities of its educational trajectory .

The quota system provides for the offer of regular or additional vacancies, depending on the size of the course. Courses with up to 30 regular vacancies should offer at least one vacancy. If an additional vacancy, there will be no obligation to fill.

Courses with more than 30 regular vacancies should offer two vacancies, which can also be regular or additional. If they are regular, the vacancies will be subtracted from the vacancies of wide competition from ENEM-UNICAMP.

Half of the quotas will be destined to candidates who also fit the criteria of quotas to Black, brown and indigenous (PPI) .

Selection and self -declaration process

Candidates interested in running for reserved vacancies should make a self -declaration during registration.

This procedure, provided for by the Inter -American Court of Human Rights and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), is a way to guarantee access and to inclusion of trans people in higher education. In addition, it will be necessary to present a life report practice already adopted by other institutions, which will be evaluated by a verification committee.

According to the Permanent Commission for the Vestibular (Comvest), in the entrance exam 2025 of Unicamp, 279 candidates enrolled with social name and 40 were summoned. The most sought after courses were visual arts, biological sciences and medicine.

The implementation of quotas is the result of the articulation of social movements, which worked with the university to ensure the trans representativeness at the institution. Unicamp joins 13 other federal and state universities that have already adopted similar systems.
