Understand how to talk about the war in Ukraine with children

THE War in Ukraine it is an important subject to be addressed with children of all age groups, according to Elisa Rachel Pisani Altafim, a specialist in parenting and child development at the Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal Foundation.

In an interview with CNNat the CNN Educationshe recalled that children “are attentive to what is happening, they listen on TV, or even adults talking”: “We need to be attentive to what children hear and what they are feeling”.

“When we talk about the war, it’s important to offer age-appropriate information, according to the ability to understand”, he reinforced.

At the same time, Elisa said that younger children may not be interested and, in this case, it is important not to insist, but “be aware if they have contact with this reality, because not talking about it can generate fears and insecurities”.

The main thing, according to her, is listen to them and offer support, always reassuring them and correcting information.

The school also has its role, according to the expert: “Teachers and educators must show that the conflict is not close, that there is distance, and they must demonstrate that there are people helping others, adults focus on positive aspects that are happening in midst of war”.
