Netflix’s “Adolescence” series has become a public success and was the most viewed content of the streaming platform. The popularity of production threw light and encouraged public debate on young and incel male culture, their view on women and the effects of this on contemporary society.
The universe of emojis and its hidden meanings, apparently restricted to the young portion of the population, were one of the key pieces for the development of the plot, which revolves around the elucidation of Katie’s death, which was allegedly murdered by Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), 13.
Based on their interactions on Instagram, Detective Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) assumes that they were friends or even had a relationship. This until Bascombe’s own son – also a school student – tells him he’s completely wrong.
The seemingly harmless emojis that Katie commented on Jamie’s posts were actually a bullying code. Dynamite emoji represents a “red pill” exploding, a reference to the “manosphere.” Symbol 100 is another code of the male community, alluding to a theory within these circles that 80% of women are attracted to only 20% of men. In other words, Katie was implying that Jamie was an “incel.”
In real life, Red Pill and Inel culture uses emojis with non-manic meanings to express itself on social networks, such as Discord and X. The same is also true for another groups with offensive posture and criminal behaviors such as pedophiles and cleptomaniacs. Check out a list of emojis and their hidden meanings :
– Used by the Cleptomaniac group, which are people who have a psychiatric disorder characterized by an uncontrollable boosting impulse. The community calls itself “blueberries” and therefore also uses the blueberry emoji to identify and caption the publications they do to show what they stole.
– adopted by the Red Pill community, characterized by men who exchange macho tips on how to behave in society and how to treat women. The pill refers to the movie “Matrix”, and the associated stone head emojis indicate men of high intellectual capacity.
– Emoji related to pedophilia was born as a reference to Vladimir Nabokov’s book “Lolita”, in which the protagonist is obsessed, kidnapped and abusing a 12 -year -old girl. The connection between emoji and the work is due to the fact that lollipop in English is “lollypop”.
– Identified as neo -Nazi symbols and groups of defenders of white supremacy. The glass of milk was also adopted during the Nazi regime in Germany as a symbol of a supposed superiority of the white population, which would stop the ability to digest the dairy drink. The two rays together refer to Schutzstaffel, Adolf Hitler’s paramilitary group known by the acronym SS.
