Understand the changes in High School that will be valid from 2025

After the presidential sanction of the law with the rules on the New High School, with some vetoes, the school routine of Brazilian students will be changed from 2025, with a transition period for students who are studying high school at the time.

The main change will be in the total workload for the three years of education. The new law maintains the 3,000-hour workload, but determines a new division, with an increase in the period allocated to basic general education. The division will be as follows:

  • 2,400 hours for basic general training;
  • 600 hours for training itineraries (languages and their technologies; mathematics and their technologies; natural sciences and their technologies; applied human and social sciences).

These changes apply to students who do not opt for technical education.

The development of training itineraries will now be the responsibility of the National Education Council, made up of members of civil society appointed by the MEC. Previously, this responsibility was the responsibility of the Ministry.

Technical education

For students who choose technical training, the workload will be divided as follows:

  • 1,800 hours for basic general training;
  • 300 hours for in-depth studies in subjects from the National Common Curricular Base related to technical professional training;
  • 900 hours for subjects in the technical course chosen by the student.

The provision of technical education may be carried out in cooperation between state education departments and accredited professional education institutions.

Spanish not mandatory

Despite attempts to change the text, Spanish remains a non-mandatory subject.

Spanish should be offered “additionally, as a preferential option, to the extent possible for education networks.” He mentioned in his opinion that making it mandatory creates ongoing public expenditure.

Furthermore, for indigenous communities, secondary education may be offered in native languages.

Night school

According to the approved text, each municipality must have at least one public school offering high school education in the evening. The measure should be adopted if there is a demand demonstrated and proven by enrollment in the evening period.
