Understand what abdominal hysterectomy is, surgery performed by Preta Gil during tumor removal

Singer Preta Gil spoke for the first time this Sunday (20) after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor that included a total abdominal hysterectomy.

A hysterectomy It is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus, which may also include removal of the cervix. Surgery can be classified as partial or total, also known as radical.

The gynecologist and obstetrician Andrea Grieco explains that what defines whether the procedure is partial or total is the removal of only the body of the uterus or also the cervix.

The procedure is usually indicated for women with serious problems in the pelvic area, such as:

  • cervical cancer
  • Advanced stage ovarian cancer
  • infections
  • fibroids
  • hemorrhages
  • severe endometriosis
  • uterine prolapse

How is the procedure done?

In the case of singer Preta Gil, the hysterectomy was total – the body and cervix were removed – and abdominal, that is, the access route to the uterus was made through an incision in the abdomen.

the gynecologist Aline Calixto explains that the other alternative is vaginal hysterectomy, when access to the uterus is through an incision in the patient’s vagina.

There is also laparoscopic hysterectomy, when cuts are made in the navel and vagina.

What are the consequences of the surgery?

The main consequence of hysterectomy is not being able to get pregnant.

With the removal of the uterus, the patient also stops menstruating, but Calixto reiterates that this does not mean that she entered menopause. If her ovaries are preserved, the woman still has part of her menstrual cycle and will ovulate normally.

“Removing the uterus does not change the woman’s hormones, which are produced by the ovaries. She won’t menstruate anymore because she doesn’t have the place in her body where the layer of blood from menstruation proliferates [o endométrio]. But there is no change in hormones”, says Calixto.

She also considers that in cases of partial hysterectomy, it may be that the patient has cyclical bleeding, similar to menstruation. “This occurs due to some remnant of part of the endometrium.”

There are also other possible consequences, such as loss of libido and lubrication or pain during intercourse.

How is the recovery?

Calixto explains that the surgery can be considered a simple procedure, but this can change depending on the patient’s body.

Even so, the recovery is painful, according to the doctor. Because it is a surgery in the abdominal region, some patients complain of pain performing simple tasks and movements, “even to laugh”, says Calixto.
