Understand what changes in the INSS retirement rules from January 1st

As of January 1, 2022, new rules for INSS (National Social Security Institute) retirement will apply, following the transition period provided for by the Social Security reform established in November 2019.

In an interview with CNN Radio, Jeanne D’Arc Magliano, specialist and master in Social Security from PUC-SP, explained what the changes will be for 2022.

According to her, the reduction of rights provided for by the reform is done gradually, as it brought “relevant impacts for future retirements and calculation basis.”

Three types of retirement will change. In 2022, women must be at least 61 and a half years old, with 15 years of contribution. Before, the same contribution period was required, at 61 years of age.

Retirement by points also underwent changes. “On January 1, a woman must have at least 30 years of contribution and 59 years of age, totaling 89 points; men, on the other hand, must have 35 years of contribution and 64 years of age, totaling 99 points.”

Before, the sum for women was 88 points, while 98 for men. Finally, the minimum retirement age also changes: from 2022 onwards, women must be 57 years and 6 months and men 62 years and 6 months.

Jeanne even made a recommendation: “More important than memorizing the ages and rules is to look for an expert.” According to her, the calculation of when it is most appropriate to retire must be personalized: “It’s not a lottery and shooting in the dark, there is pension planning, you need to analyze the pension statement, from the first day, with values.”

The specialist also assesses that it is not good to “fail to contribute to the general regime” at all, because it “guarantees minimal assistance.”

“My suggestion is to put more eggs in this basket, never stop contributing, even if you can’t contribute with the larger amount, but make a private pension or investment in real estate, in order to finally get closer to the monthly income before retiring” , completed.
