Understand what it is and how bariatric surgery is performed, a procedure performed by Jojo Todynho

Singer Jojo Todynho announced on Tuesday (8) on her social networks that she had been hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro for bariatric surgery. On Thursday (10), the funk artist was discharged and claimed to have felt a lot of pain after the intervention.

The singer, who previously went so far as to say that she had given up due to the harassment of Internet users, performed the surgery after a few months dedicated to healthy habits, such as training in the gym and balanced diet. The new routine made Jojo lose more than 20kg.

“To make something very clear here, I didn’t tell you that I wasn’t going to have the bariatric procedure for fear of being cancelled, no […] It’s a delicate surgery and I don’t have to answer if I’m going to do it or not. Decisions in my life are made by me and not by the internet”, he pointed out.

“When I get back home, I’ll tell you everything in detail about this process and why I decided to do it. I have a wonderful team that takes care of me and that’s it, ”she warned.

When is the right time to resort to bariatrics?

According to the doctor Fabio Miranda specialist in general surgery and digestive endoscopy, from Rio de Janeiro, the patient should only resort to surgery after a change in habits and less invasive attempts.

“Before opting for bariatrics, I recommend a change in habits that can take you out of obesity or prevent it. Even in cases of patients who are going to undergo the intervention, habits are also beneficial, as they help in the constancy of results, which is so important in the post-surgical period. Once you change your mindset, 50% of the way is already traced”, explains the expert.

The ideal would be to rule out all existing obesity treatment possibilities – such as exercises, medications, intragastric balloons and gastric endosuture.

“Considering that it is a serious, chronic and progressive disease, the best option is to treat it even before it progresses to a worse phase. When noticing weight gain, we should turn on the warning signs and focus on healthy habits”, he advises.

Bariatric surgery is indicated for cases of severe obesity and the method consists of changing the original shape of the stomach, reducing the ability to receive food and making it difficult to absorb a high number of calories, in addition to contributing to the production of the satiety hormone.

“An unoperated person is capable of consuming between 1 liter and 1.5 liters of food. Bariatric patients, on the other hand, have a capacity for only 25ml to 200ml ”, she reveals.

It is important to emphasize that, as this is a highly invasive procedure that will have a great impact on the person’s life, it is important that the patient also receives pre- and post-surgical psychological follow-up.

What are the techniques used?

Miranda also explains that, currently, there are two effective techniques: Sleeve and Bypass, the second being the most used in Brazil.

“Both consist of removing part of the stomach. The big difference between them is that in the Bypass the patient also has the intestine altered, to reconnect it to the part of the stomach that is still functional”, explains the specialist.

For patients who do not want to undergo the

surgery, the specialist explains that medicine already has minimally invasive procedures with highly proven results, such as the swallowable intragastric balloon.

“The patient swallows a capsule, which is placed in his stomach to occupy, on average, 30% of the organ and thus promote more satiety, facilitating the diet. This technology allows a loss of approximately 33% of the total body weight and lasts around four months in the body”, he concludes.
