Understand why the US vetoed Brazil’s resolution on war at the UN

The resolution on the war between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas proposed by Brazil at the UN Security Council was vetoed this Wednesday (18) by the United States.

The text condemned all violence and hostilities against civilians and all acts of terrorism and called for the immediate and unconditional of all the hostages. The resolution proposed by Brazil also called for pauses in the conflict to allow humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip, the region where the war is concentrated.

The justification presented by the North American representative to the UN Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, was the fact that the proposal made by Brazil did not mention Israel’s rights to self-defense.

“Yes, resolutions are important. And yes, this Council he must speak out. But the actions we take must be informed by the facts It is support direct diplomatic efforts. This can save lives. O.C.advice need to get this right,” she said.

In the vote, only the United States opposed the text, while Russia and the United Kingdom abstained. In total, there were 12 votes in favor.

Although the vote resulted in an absolute majority in favor of approving the text, the Americans have the prerogative to veto a resolution, as they are one of the nations with a permanent seat on the Security Council. China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom have the same status.

China and Brazil criticized the US stance

China’s Ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, accused the states United to take the members of the Cadvice to believe that the resolution could be adopted after failing to comment or express opposition during negotiations.

“The final result of the vote is simply unbelievable”he said.

Brazil’s representative on the Council criticized the difficulty in approving a consensual text in the face of a situation that he classified as a “humanitarian catastrophe”.

“The Council should take action and act quickly. The Council’s paralysis in the face of a humanitarian catastrophe is not in the interests of the international community. While we made a great effort to accommodate different — and sometimes opposing — positions, our focus was, and continues to be, on the humanitarian situation,” he said.
