Underwater photographer: the most beautiful underwater photos of 2022

The most beautiful underwater image of the year was born from an adrenaline-pumping encounter in the Maldives sea with 11 whale sharksthe largest fish in the world, during a dive: it’s called “Giants of the Night” and the Spanish took it Rafael Fernandez Caballero. He is the winner of the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022, the competition born in England that since 1965 has rewarded underwater photos, above all of animals.

“I was diving with Gador Muntaner, a shark researcher, who couldn’t believe his eyes to see that the number of sharks around us kept growing. That night she counted 11 sharks: an unrepeatable encounter that no one thought was possible»Said the photographer commenting on the victory.

This year the Underwater photographer of the year 2022 was attended by candidates from 71 countries with 4200 images, but Caballero’s spectacular shot immediately convinced the judges “This image took my breath away from the first viewing and I never tire of looking at it,” he commented the judge of the competition, Peter Rowland.

In addition to the Grand Prize, the competition awarded other photos: Matty Smith, with another crazy image of a great white shark taken in the Neptune Islands, Australia, he was named British Underwater Photographer of the Year: «This shot of the most famous fish in the sea really captures its character. An excellent reward for the perseverance of the photographer, who experimented with different techniques until he got the result he wanted, ”commented Judge Tobias Friedrich.

The prize Save Our Seas Foundation Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year 2022 it was instead assigned to the Vietnamese Thien Nguyen Ngoc, that with the aerial photo «Big Appetit» shows boats that catch anchovies, one of the most consumed fish in Vietnam, to tell about a practice that is seriously endangering the ecosystem. Among the other main prizes, the one awarded to the Spaniard Quico Abadal, Up & Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022 for the creative image “Supernova In Paradise” taken at sunset off Sairee Beach, Koh Tao, Thailand, showing a woman poetically floating in the water.

The competition awarded images from 13 other categories, including «Macro», «Behavior», «Wreck photos» and many more. In this gallery all the winners:
