The country’s unemployed population, estimated at 10.6 million, dropped 11.5% from the previous quarter — 1.4 million fewer people. This is what data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua), released this Thursday (30) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show.
In the twelve months through May, the fall was 30.2%, less 4.6 million unemployed people.
The country’s unemployment rate, in turn, stood at 9.8% in the quarter ended in May, the lowest in the quarter since 2015, when it stood at 8.3%.
Compared to the previous quarter, the rate dropped 1.4 pp and, compared to the same quarter last year, the drop was 4.9 pp
The number of employed persons reached 97.5 million, the highest in the historical series started in 2012. The increase was 2.4% in comparison with the previous quarter, and 10.6% in the annual comparison.
This is equivalent to an increase of 2.3 million employed persons in the quarter, and 9.4 million in the year.
